Farm Subsidies:
Support your local farmers’ markets!
Like Social Security, farm subsidies were introduced by FDR in the 1930s as “a temporary solution to deal with an emergency.” Now, we spend more than $25 billion annually on farm subsidies that no longer solve the problems they were intended to fix and unintentionally cause additional problems such as obesity.
“If farm subsidies were really about alleviating farmer poverty, then lawmakers could guarantee every full-time farmer an income of 185% of the federal level ($38,203 for a family of four) for just over $4 billion annually—one-sixth the current cost of farm subsidies” (Heritage Foundation). Yes, I just quoted the Heritage Foundation. This is one of the few issues on which I agree with the Heritage Foundation. Of course, it is one of the few issues that Republicans and Democrats generally agree upon–just not elected officials.
